On February 22, 2013, at the age of 18, Davis made his professional debut against Desi Williams, who had a record of 0 victories and 4 losses, all by way of stoppage.

The contest took place in Washington, D.C., at the D.C. Armory as the co-feature to Lamont Peterson vs. Kendall Holt, an IBF junior welterweight bout. Davis was knocked out (KO) in the opening round of the fight.

Davis had an 8-1 record by August 2014, with all of his victories coming inside the distance. In October 2014, Davis was given a six-round test against 28-year-old veteran Germán Meraz (47-31-1, 25 KOs).

Meraz was knocked out in rounds three and five by Davis, who went on to win the fight by unanimous decision (UD), with scores of 60-52 from all three judges.

The contest would take place on the undercard of James DeGale vs. Badou Jack’s super middleweight belt unification bout.

Pedraza received a waiver from the IBF to fight Davis since he still had to face Liam Walsh. Matchmakers for Mayweather Promotions attempted to negotiate a deal for Davis to take on titleholder Jason Sosa before the fight was officially announced.

On May 7, 2017, it was revealed that Davis would make his first championship defense in London, England. The information was provided by Frank Warren, the promoter of challenger Liam Walsh (21-0, 14 KO), who was also the IBF’s top-ranked fighter.

Davis would participate in the co-main event of Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Conor McGregor on August 26, 2017, at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada, according to TMZ Sports, which first made the claim in early July 2017.

The former WBO champion Román Martnez, whose most recent contest ended in a KO loss to Vasyl Lomachenko in June 2016, was the opponent Davis would likely choose to defend his IBF championship against, according to The Ring magazine, on July 29.

The CEO of Mayweather Promotions, Leonard Ellerbe, stated on November 15, 2017, that Davis would fight again with stablemate Badou Jack in the first three months of 2018. He also disclosed that Davis would face a top-tier rival.

In November 2018, Davis declared that he would fight former three-weight world champion Abner Mares (31-3-1, 15 KOs) in Southern California to defend his WBA championship in February 2019.

In front of 12,000 spectators in his hometown of Baltimore, Maryland, on July 27, 2019, Davis defeated Ricardo Nez via second-round technical knockout to successfully defend his WBA (Super) super featherweight title.

On December 28, 2019, Davis made his first move up to the lightweight division and won the vacant WBA (Regular) lightweight championship by outlasting former unified featherweight world champion Yuriorkis Gamboa via technical knockout in the 12th round.

On October 31, 2020, at The Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, Showtime’s first-ever pay-per-view event featured lightweight champion Davis defending his title against four-division world champion Léo Santa Cruz.

It was announced on February 24th, 2023, that Davis would take against Ryan Garcia on April 22nd in Las Vegas, Nevada. The eagerly anticipated fight would be a combined Showtime and DAZN pay-per-view event.
