Michael Coutts-Trotter is the Secretary of New South Wales’s Department of Premier and Cabinet. He was born in the early 1970s in England to Muray Coutts-Trotter and Helen. Michael moved with his parents to Australia in 1976.  His father used to be the chief justice of Madras. Unfortunately, it is not known if he is the only son of his parents or has any siblings.

In 1986, he got a nine-year sentence for supplying heroin to addicts. He was released in 1988 after two years and nine months in jail. After that, he decided to move further in academics.

He completed his graduation from Saint Ignatius College, University of Technology, Sydney.  He started his career as a public servant in 2007 after being appointed as the director general of the NSW Department of Education.
